RANSOMWARE ATTACK – Medusa

As chairman of Clan Irwin Association, I want all our members to be aware of this recent cyber attack. The following is an excerpt from an online story from Forbes.com. There are other online stories as well. This attack seems very serious. Many of our members use Gmail and Outlook.

Please take time to check this out as you, or your family and friends, could be affected.

“The Federal Bureau of Investigation has recently warned of weird ransomware attack threats delivered by the United States Postal Service, yes really, alongside a dangerous ransomware campaign from so-called Ghost attackers, and some of the most sophisticated threats against Gmail users ever. Having previously also advised users to use two-factor authentication to mitigate such attacks, a newly published FBI industry alert has rolled the mitigation advice into one as ongoing attacks by the Medusa ransomware gang continue. Enable 2FA for webmail services such as Gmail and Outlook, as well as for VPNs, the FBI has warned. And enable it now. Here’s what you need to know.” Link to story:

One story stated that more than 300 businesses have already been affected including hospitals, financial institutions, and various levels of governments.

The primary recommendation is that you implement 2FA – two factor authentication for logging into all your online accounts.

Unfortunately, this is the world in which we live.  Technology is wonderful. We simply must stay informed and take action to protect ourselves, in the same way as we take precautions in other areas of our lives.
